The late Dave Cockrum created the X-Men as we know them. That’s all there is to it. To advertise the success of his all-new, all-different X-Men, Marvel put out this house ad, targeting the lone Silver Age X-Men fan who hadn’t been reading the book. We can only assume that fan was Kurt Busiek.
Well now, Marvel is celebrating the newest era of UNCANNY X-MEN by using this art as a “Hidden Gem” Cover for UNCANNY X-MEN #1. As far as gems go, I wouldn’t call it all that hidden, but it sure is pretty. That said, the irony that Cockrum’s favorite mutant (the blue boi Nightcrawler) isn’t in this image is not lost on me.
