They Keep Killing Quire In Our Exclusive X-Force #17 Preview

It sucks to be Quentin Quire. He has become the punching bag for the X-Force creative team of Benjamin Percy and Joshua Cassara who have killed him in nearly every mission the mutant CIA has undertaken. Sure they gave him a girlfriend, and that’s pretty near, but he also has become bored of death. In our exclusive X-Force #17 preview, we get to see why he wants to keep on living.

Here’s the honest truth, the one time Kid Omega deserves to get knocked down a few pegs. When he was introduced in Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s New X-Men, he was a protoypical non-conformist. He quickly transformed from a straight A student to a fascist incel lashing out at an unfair world. He caused a riot and several people died, including Sophie Cuckoo. Quite frankly, his crippiling addiction to the drug Kick, which was actually a aerosolized form of the millennia old bigoted bacteria/CEO/post-humanist cult leader John Sublime didn’t help matters.

After dying, living on as an incorporeal being, corporealizing again and becoming an international terrorist for a hot minute, Quire begrudgingly became Wolverine’s pet project at the Jean Grey School. That relationship has now brought him into X-Force where, again, he just keeps getting murdered in gruesome, and very funny, ways.

Things are a big different now for the young chap. For one, he has a girlfriend in Phoebe Cuckoo. She may not have been the Cuckoo he was pining for all those years back, but she’s the one he needs now. That relationship is making Quire reevaluate his self-destructive tendencies and forcing him to question why he is OK being canon fodder.

Benjamin Percy and Joshua Cassara have been doing phenominal work on X-Force, elevating it to one of the best books Marvel is putting out right now. While Perccy is weaving multiple plot threads into a massive, tangled knot, Cassara is making a case that he is the best artist working in comics today. Marvel has recognized this, highlighting him as one of their Stormbreakers, an artist they are pushing for the next two years. The synergy between these creators is exciting, and gets us pumped for this issue, out next week.
