Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays, everything else Wednesdays.
Tony’s pick: Uncanny Avengers #1: Innocent people and world leaders are dead after simultaneous attacks on the U.S. and Krakoan governments, and that means one thing: It’s time for a new iteration of Steve Rogers’ Unity Squad featuring Captain America, Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver, Psylocke and Penance. Together, they will realize that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Written by Gerry Duggan (X-Men) and drawn by Javier Garron (Miles Morales: Spider-Man). ($4.99) Check out a preview.
Armaan’s pick: Dark X-Men #1: After the Hellfire Gala, Madelyne Pryor realizes the world needs the X-Men now more than ever. So she builds a team with Havok (OK), Gambit (OK), Archangel (Sure), Albert the Robot Wolverine (Huh?), Emplate (What?), Azazel (WHAT THE ACTUAL F&%$?) and more. I guess dark times call for Dark X-Men. Written by Steve Foxe (X-Men ‘92: House of XCII) and drawn by Jonas Scharf (Basilisk). ($4.99) ‘Member when we redesigned Madelyne Pryor?
Bonus pick: Alpha Flight #1: Canada’s finest superteam finds itself at a schism amid the Fall of X, with Guardian on one side and Northstar and Aurora on the other. Who will be the first to say, “Sorry” in that adorable accent? Written by authentic Canadian Ed Brisson (New Mutants) and drawn by Scott Godlewski (Copperhead). ($3.99)
Adam’s pick: Marvel’s Voices: X-Men #1: From the early days of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters to the modern Krakoan era, celebrate 60 years of X-Men with stories by Greg Pak, Jan Bazaldua, Jay Edidin, Al Ewing, Nina Vakueva and more. ($6.99)
Dan’s pick: Dark Spaces: Hollywood Special #1: All aboard the Hollywood Special, the 1942 luxury train touring the United States to support the war effort. On board is fading star Vivian Drake, doing her part to boost morale and finally give the tabloids something to write about other than her nose-diving career and shambles of a family life. But when the Special pulls into the coal-mining town of Minersville, Pennsylvania, amid the collapse of a mine, Vivian finds herself facing every failure and bad memory she’s bottled up in the form of what the miners found in the dark — the thing they call the Mismatch Man, who feeds on pain and regret. Written by Jeremy Lambert and drawn by Claire Roe for IDW. ($3.99)
Mark’s pick: X-Men Red #14: As the Brotherhood reels from the cataclysmic events of the Hellfire Gala, Genesis takes advantage of the chaos and declares war. Two vast mutant armies clash, and Arakko’s idols fall, but this is only the beginning of a conflict that will remake the Red Planet. And whatever happened to Isca the Unbeaten? Written by Al Ewing and drawn by Yildiray Cinar. ($3.99) Previously, in X-Men Red …
Rasmus’ pick: Daredevil #14: Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s run on DD draws to a close. ($4.99)
Austin’s pick: X-Factor Epic Collection: Judgment War: Interestingly, this Epic Collection epically collects the X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men parts of “Inferno,” but it takes its title from the succeeding story about the time a Celestial stranded the O5 on an alien world for a story that’s surprisingly divisive (among the CXF Slack) for being written by Louise Simonson and drawn by Paul Smith. Collecting X-Factor #37-50, Annual #4 and Uncanny X-Men #242-243. ($44.99) Where does “Judgment War” rank on Battle of the Atom’s Big Ol’ List?
Matt’s pick: Detective Comics: Gotham Nocturne Overture HC: Something is terribly wrong with Batman. No matter the tests Bruce takes, nor the numbers he counts, the greatest detective in the world can’t pin down the source of this creeping dread — of his own inner demons and a looming mortality. Meanwhile, real demons roam the shadows as an ancient melody haunts the Gotham night. As Batman investigates the songs and demons of Gotham, he is forced to confront the oldest question: Has there been a demon within him all along? And if so, what does it want … and why hasn’t it taken over yet? Collecting Detective Comics #1,062-1,065 by Ram V, Rafael Albuquerque, Si Spurrier, Dani and more. ($29.99) We covered it all in BatChat.
