Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays, everything else Wednesdays.
Matt’s pick: Batman and Robin #1: Father and son. Bruce and Damian. Batman and Robin. A lot has happened to the Dynamic Duo recently, but now they’re back together and ready to fight crime in Gotham — just in time for Batman’s most monstrous rogues to team up to turn the city into an urban jungle. Written by Joshua Williamson (Dark Crisis) and drawn by Simone Di Meo (We Only Find Them When They’re Dead). ($4.99) Previously, in BatChat …
Anna’s pick: Daredevil #1: Writer Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt) and artist Aaron Kuder (All-New Guardians of the Galaxy) begin a new chapter in the life of the Man Without Fear. Maybe this time he’ll be happy. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA, just kidding. ($6.99)
Mark’s pick: Avengers Inc. #1: Her name is Janet Van Dyne. She’s a hero. She’s a celebrity. She’s hunting a killer. His name is Victor Shade. He’s a villain. He’s an enigma. He just got killed. And together, they’re out to solve every mystery in the Marvel Universe, starting with their own. Written by Al Ewing (X-Men Red) and drawn by Leonard Kirk (Sabretooth). ($4.99)
Tony’s pick: Coda #1: The despondent bard Hum finds a slice of tranquility with his wife, the Urken named Serka, in an ever-darkening, magic-less apocalypse — or so it seems. Prophecies of paradise and the return of magic? Hum is skeptical, while Serka faces difficult moral decisions on the road, with winter quickly approaching. The BOOM Studios series by writer Si Spurrier (Legion of X) and artist Matias Bergara (Step by Bloody Step) returns. ($4.99)
Dan’s pick: Kill More #1: The city of Colonia is suffering from total economic collapse, but worse than the unemployment and urban decay is the skyrocketing homicide rate. Most of the few cops left on the force think it’s just another symptom of the city’s decline, but one detective has a darker theory — that the most depraved killers in the country have all moved here to take advantage of the chaos. As he and his new partner dig deeper into their rapidly growing list of open cases, they’ll find themselves in the crosshairs of a growing group of maniacs who realize the best way to stay ahead of the cops in a city full of killers is to kill more. Written by Scott Bryan Wilson (Trve Kvlt) and drawn by Max Alan Fuchs for IDW. ($3.99) Previously, in IDW Originals …
Sean’s pick: Danger Street #9: Two knights, noble in their quest, are ready to do whatever it takes to bring honor to their sigil. Witness Manhunter and Codename: Assassin fight to the death in a match of wits and stamina as the life of the Commodore and the universe hang in the balance. Written by Tom King and drawn by Jorge Fornes. ($4.99)
Adam’s pick: X-Force #44: X-Force is captured, but what power could possibly keep them off the grid, and who is truly to blame? With Sage, Deadpool and Domino on the outside, will the Wolverine Sentinels beat them to their quarry, or can the team reunite to take down the enemies of mutantkind once and for all? Written by Benjamin Percy and drawn by Robert Gill. ($3.99)
Austin’s pick: The Periodic Table of DC: DK Publishing takes a scientific look at the elements that bind the DC Universe in this book of character profiles. So does that mean it will explain Batmanium? Also there’s a poster. ($20)
Bonus pick: I Am Stan: Cartoonist Tom Scioli follows up his graphic novel biography of Jack Kirby with one focused on Stan Lee. Here’s hoping it talks about the wigs, the ways he F’d over his fellow creators and all the people who took advantage of him later in life. Published by Ten Speed Press. ($22.99)
