I guess it’s true what that T-shirt I grew out of said: All the best X-Men are women.
Of the now 14 – FOURTEEN – series announced for the X-Men’s From the Ashes era, SIX are women-led solo series: Phoenix, Dazzler, Storm, Mystique, Psylocke and Laura Kinney: Wolverine.
The sixth series was announced Sunday at Comic-Con in San Diego, to be written by Erica Schultz (X-23: Deadly Genesis) and drawn by Giada Belviso (Jackpot & Black Cat). Issue #1 is due out Dec. 11.
Is that too many X-books? We’ll find out in five to six months when some of these alleged ongoings suddenly become miniseries. Certainly, the Brevoort X-office is casting a wide net, playing on the understanding that everyone has a different favorite mutant to see which of them can actually carry a book. And Laura has a better track record than some of the others. (Seriously, of the six, she and Dazzler historically have had the longest runs.)
Laura also has the benefit of being in a blockbuster movie this summer, so there’s that.

The new series will see Wolverine enter the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe, places that neither the X-Men nor her friends in NYX would dare go, to defend mutants who can’t defend themselves. Her violent methods and unstoppable determination make her a one-mutant army, striking fear in those that take advantage of her kind. But as her reputation grows and more mutants in need turn to her, she may just find herself a target herself…

“We want to show you all different sides of Laura. There will be laughing and crying,” teased Schultz. “Laura has dealt with a lot, and when she’s met her other clones, she’s asked herself ‘Is that the person I’m supposed to be? Am I fated to be that person? Should I take my own path, or end up like Logan?’ She decides to forge her own path. This will be her solo adventure.”
