Forge leads a new X-Force and the Super-Pets assemble in this week’s Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New comics come out Wednesdays. See your local comic shop for more info.

Adam’s pick: X-Force #1: The world is fractured. Forge uses his powers of invention to devise the only fix: an all-new, all-different X-Force. Forge leads a custom-made, handpicked team of mutants — Askani, Captain Britain, Sage, Surge and Tank — in off-the-books missions so dire, so integral to the fate of the Marvel Universe, there’s no time to stop for permission. As Forge detects increasing threats across the planet, he will recruit a specialist for each target — first up: Deadpool. Written by Geoffrey Thorne and drawn by Marcus To. Matt’s pick: Super-Pets Special: Bitedentity Crisis: Haley, the beloved bark-out star of Nightwing, finds herself to be a fish out of water when she arrives on Kent Farm. As our big-city mutt tries to adjust to country living, she’s shocked to discover a kennel of courageous critters is already waiting for her. Also featuring additional stories of misch-woof and mutt-hem by Tony Fleecs, Alexis Quasarano, Michael Conrad, Dan Watters, Kyle Starks, Mike Norton, PJ Holden, Sami Basri and Chris Mitten. ($5.99) Buy it here.

Scott’s pick: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1: With the Morphin Grid in peril, the people of Earth are left without the Power Rangers to protect them. The ultimate battle against Dark Specter will play out with unexpected consequences, while an unexpected group of rogues, villains and Rangers make strange company. But even if they win, can they rebuild everything they’ve lost? Written by Melissa Flores and drawn by Simona Di Gianfelice for BOOM Studios. ($7.99) Buy it here.

Dan’s pick: Final Fight #1: The Mad Gear Gang has infested Metro City for years. But after they kidnap the mayor’s daughter, three heroes arise to clean up the streets once and for all: Cody Travers, bad boy street brawler; Guy, Bushinryu ninja master; and Mike Haggar, pro-wrestler turned mayor. Based on my favorite side-scrolling beat-em-up Capcom game and written by Matt Moylan and drawn by Matthew Weldon for Udon Studios. ($4.99)

Mark’s pick: Immortal Thor #13: The son of Zeus sought Thor out, for Toranos’ wheel had turned for the Olympians too, and two Gods together might solve such a mystery. The trail took them to a wasteland of snow and ice, to terror and treachery, and to an old foe of Hercules, at the height of her dread power. Written by Al Ewing and drawn by Jan Bazaldua. ($4.99) Buy it here.

Tony’s pick: Department of Truth #24: Before Lee Harvey Oswald took his fateful place in the window of the Texas Book Depository, he spent time behind the Iron Curtain. This is fact. But he wasn’t just a sympathizer — he was on a secret mission to infiltrate the Soviet Ministry of Lies. This is Truth. Written by James Tynion IV and drawn by Martin Simmonds for Image. ($3.99) Buy it here.

Rasmus’ pick: Saga #67: Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ sci-fi epic returns for its 12th arc, as 12-year-old Hazel embarks on the most important adventure of her young life. For Image. ($3.99) Buy it here.

Austin’s pick: Star Wars Modern Era Epic Collection: Skywalker Strikes: The ragtag Rebel Alliance has just destroyed the massive Death Star, but the Empire isn’t toppled yet. Join Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 as they continue the fight for freedom against Darth Vader and the evil Emperor. Marvel rewrites Star Wars continuity in its first comics from the franchise in decades. Collecting Star Wars (2015) #1-14 and #1 Director’s Cut, Star Wars: Vader Down and Darth Vader (2015) #13-15, by Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen, John Casssaday, Simone Bianchi, Stuart Immonen, Mike Deodato Jr., Salvador Larroca and more.
