The year of our lord 2025 brings DOOM. Not just in the sense that the incoming presidential administration keeps threatening to undo many of the systems keeping this increasingly fragile country together, but in the sense that Marvel is pushing a big Doctor Doom-centric crossover to start the year. So yeah, lots of doom, just in time for your seasonal affective disorder to kick in. Honestly, if you need someone to talk to, we’re here.
But first, we combed through February’s solicitations, and here are a few comics we think will help chase the sads away.
Marvel
One World Under Doom #1: Marvel’s first big 2025 event starts here, sucking in the Fantastic Four, the Red Hulk, the Thunderbolts and everyone else appearing in a Marvel movie this year, not to mention Doctor Doom, revealed to be the big bad of the next phase of Marvel movies, inspired by a story from 10 years ago in which he became god emperor of the multiverse, because art imitates … other art. Written by Fantastic Four’s Ryan North and drawn by Powers of X’s R.B. Silva, both of whom do wonders for this book’s Q rating. Check out our recent interview with North. | Pre-order it here.
Weapon X-Men #1: Speaking of One World Under Doom, this tie-in comic assembles an oops-all-Predator-handshake-memes team of X-Men to perform a high-stakes mutant rescue mission in Latveria. Starring Wolverine (who already has a solo series)! Cable (who already has a solo miniseries)! Deadpool (who already has a solo series not to mention a team-up series with Wolverine)! Thunderbird (OK, this one’s good actually)! And Chamber (one of these things is not like the others)! Written by former Cable and Uncanny X-Men writer Joe Casey and drawn by ChrisCross. Check out our recent interview with Casey. | Pre-order it here.
Marvel Comics for Dummies: Many have tried to read every Marvel comic ever to understand the lore of this 80-plus-year-old publishing institution (wuddup, Douglas Wolk). But for the rest of us, the question of “Where do I start?” or “What’s this guy’s deal?” persist. Fear not, dummy, for Wiley, the publisher of the “For Dummies” series of educational books, and author Troy Brownfield have teamed up with Marvel to create this guide so helpful, even an idiot like you could understand it. Just kidding. You’re not an idiot. Everyone knows ComicsXF readers are smart, sophisticated and undeniably sexy. Don’t look at us like that. One of our writers read every Marvel comic ever once. Once. | Pre-order it here.
DC
Batman #157: Writer Chip Zdarsky wraps his time with the Dark Knight, so he can make room for Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s “Hush” sequel, “Hush 2: Even Quieter.” Jorge Jimenez and Tony Daniel both contribute art to this oversized issue. Previously, in BatChat …
Zatanna #1: Fans of Mariko Tamaki and Javier Rodriguez’s recent Black Label mini Zatanna: Bring Down the House can rest assured that a talented artist will continue to lovingly render Z from top hat to fishnets in this new DC All In series by writer/artist Jamal Campbell.
Green Lantern Corps #1: Y’know how people have favorite mutants like Glob Herman and Rubber Maid? Well, DC fans have favorite Lanterns that they also harass creators online for not using more often. Fortunately, there’s a book where they can all be shoved in and jostle for page time, and that book is Green Lantern Corps, newly dusted off with a creative team of writers Jeremy Adams (who also writes the GL solo title) and Morgan Hampton and artist Fernando Pasarin.
Other publishers
Bug Wars #1: What if Conan the Barbarian was set in the backyard from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids? That’s the premise of this new Image series from the former Conan team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Mahmud Asrar.
House of Slaughter #30: The companion series for BOOM Studios’ Something Is Killing the Children wraps after a long, successful run. Co-written by James Tynion IV and Sam Johns and drawn by Werther Dell’Edera and Letizia Cadonici.
Let This One Be a Devil #1: A book about the legend of the Jersey Devil? It’s like co-writers James Tynion IV and Steve Foxe and artist Piotr Kowalski knew how many members of the CXFamily are from the Garden State! This Dark Horse book was made for us. Pre-order it here.
Godzilla vs. America: Chicago: A new IDW anthology series pits the King of the Monsters against cities across the globe, featuring stories by creators who live there. In the first outing, Tim Seeley, Mike Costa, Ryan Browne, Ezra Claytan Daniels and more let Godzilla lay waste to the Windy City.
Darkwing Duck #1: It’s Darkwing: Year One as writer Daniel Kibblesmith and artists Brandt & Stein team up to retell how Drake Mallard became the Terror that Flaps in the Night, with much likely embellishment of the truth, at Dynamite Comics, now known as much for its Disney and Warner Bros. licenses as it is for its T&A comics.
