Hark, a ZARK, in our EXCLUSIVE preview of Ultimate X-Men #18

ZARK.

Thanks to sound effects both hand-drawn and lettered, we know the sound certain Marvel characters make when they do their iconic moves. But only one of them is the sound of red beams of concussive force escaping from a man’s eyeballs.

When did ZARK become that sound? No idea. The internet was particularly unhelpful on this one. The earliest instance our gang in the CXF bullpen could find was in 1979’s Uncanny X-Men #121, the one where the gang fights Alpha Flight. The sound effect probably wasn’t used consistently until comparatively recently.

But when you see a ZARK, you know Cyclops is coming.

Generally. This is Peach Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men. The rules are different. The Peach-ster can do what she wants.
