Philadelphia is a character in our EXCLUSIVE preview of Laura Kinney: Sabretooth #1

A thing about Marvel basing the majority of its superheroes in New York is, after a while, you stop seeing local landmarks and everything sort of looks like the version of the city you see in movies and TV shows shot in Toronto or Vancouver – gray buildings and occasional park space that give the general idea of a city without any of the specificity that makes people feel like they know what they’re looking at.

So when you set your big event in Philadelphia, you owe people those landmarks. They want to see LOVE Park, Temple University, the neighborhoods of South Philly, a stadium lot full of Eagles fans. They want to feel like any moment Gritty, Frank Reynolds or Questlove can show up on panel, a cheesesteak in one hand and a red Wawa coffee cup in the other.

We didn’t get that so much in this week’s X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1, but next week’s Laura Kinney: Sabretooth #1 appears to make up for it, with imagery of the Walt Whitman Bridge, the Navy Yard and the Market Street sign on the cover. Granted, it’s all covered in plants, but it’s enough to allow me to dream that, if Gritty caught the X-Virus, the Orange One wound mutate into something even more lovable and unhinged.

Check out our exclusive preview of Laura Kinney: Sabretooth #1, out next week, and keep scrolling for the basic deets.
