We’ve met a lot of new kids during the Age of Revelation. Omega Kids. Elbecca the Chorister. Temper and Ransom’s baby. Kids who theoretically weren’t even born in the present of the X-books.
But the fact of the matter is, we’re still getting to know the kids we met during “From the Ashes,” which was only a year and a quarter of publishing time. And don’t get me wrong, we love Bronze and Melee and Axo and Deathdream and Calico and Jitter and Ransom. But when you start shoveling in more kids on top of that – with a three-month window to get to know them – it’s a lot.
It’s almost like a speed-round version of the 2000s, when the X-Mansion became … that wizard school from those books by that bad lady … and they just kept introducing new kids from the Morrison era to New Mutants Vol. 2 to New X-Men: Academy X, to the point where now you have whole generations of mutants that writers and artists have no use for unless they look good in a crowd shot.
Think about how many blond-girl mutants who aren’t Illyana or the Stepford Cuckoos have largely disappeared. Where’s Magma? Where’s Skids? Where’s Husk? Where’s Wallflower? Calico better pray that horse is enough to keep her from meeting the same fate.
Anyway, the point is, we’re glad the Exceptional kids are here, and we look forward to seeing what they get up to when we get back to the present next year.
