And that’s a wrap on Stephanie Phillips’ time with Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force.
Come January, Phillips will be off the X-books and preparing to launch a new volume of Daredevil alongside artist Lee Garbett. It’s a big transition period in general for Phillips, as her longest comics series to date, BOOM Studios’ Grim, ended this month with issue #25, with a possible animated adaptation on the way for Netflix.
But all that begs the question: Where’s Jean?
The final issue of the Phoenix series, which came out in September, ends with a splash page of Jean declaring herself happy. Not sacrificing herself to stop some cosmic-level threat, not losing her powers in some grand conflict. Just content in a moment of family reunion with her long-lost sister, Sara.
So where is she?
She wasn’t in any of the “Shadows of Tomorrow” books announced for January or February. She’s not on Stefano Caselli’s promo art for X-Men United, a book that purports to pull from all corners of the X-line.
An answer no doubt is coming. As the avatar of a cosmic entity and one of the Important X-Men, Jean can’t stay disappeared for long. Look for a last-page reveal of the Phoenix in trouble, probably sooner than you think.
