Marvel trots out the OG X-Men again in this week’s Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays, everything else Wednesdays.

Austin’s pick: Original X-Men #1: Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman and Angel — the first heroes to bear the X-Men name — once traveled into their own futures and reset the course of history. Now, another multiversal mystery calls them forth. When the dust settles, one hero will remain, trapped in the world as we know it. Written by Christos Gage and drawn by Greg Land. ($5.99) Previously, in Jean Grey …

Adam’s pick: ROM and the X-Men Marvel Tales #1: Reprinting some classic ROM and X-Men shenanigans! In ROM (1979) #17-18, written by Bill Mantlo and drawn by Sal Buscema, Rom and the X-Men are searching for the offspring of a Dire Wraith and a human, a creature known as Hybrid, which Cerebro has detected as a mutant. Then, in ROM #31-32, the Galadorian hero battles Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants — including future X-woman Rogue — before teaming up with them for a rematch against Hybrid. ($7.99) Here’s how Battle of the Atom ranked the first story and the second story.

Rasmus’ pick: Animal Pound #1: One day, former CIA operative turned professional comic book writer Thomas King thought to himself, “You know what would be fun? Adopting George Orwell’s Animal Farm for a modern audience, set at a kill shelter where the dogs, cats and rabbits take over and then quickly learn just how horrifying freedom can be.” Artist Peter Gross (The Unwritten) joins him for the ride at BOOM Studios. ($4.99) Previously, in Tom King stuff …

Matt’s pick: Maze Agency #1: Jennifer Mays, sophisticated New York private eye and owner of the Maze Agency; and her paramour, Gabriel Webb, somewhat scruffy true-crime writer and amateur sleuth, romance, solve crimes and catch killers in fair-play detective stories that the reader is challenged to solve before they do. In their latest adventure, someone is stalking the set of a slasher movie series. Written by Mike W. Barr (Batman: Son of the Demon) and drawn by Silvano Beltramo for Scout Comics. ($4.99) Learn more about the Maze Agency here.

Dan’s pick: Rare Flavours #3: Chaandni Chowk in Delhi may be relatively new concerning the breadth of history, but it’s built on the bones of the 400-year-old Mughal Capital, a representation of the new intermingling with the old. It’s here that a traditional kebab crafter still makes them in an ancient way, one enjoyed by emperors of old. It’s here that Rubin and Mo find the perfect subject for their documentary … and the perfect meal for Rubin. Written by Ram V and drawn by Filipe Andrade for BOOM Studios. ($4.99)

Bonus pick: Uncanny Avengers #5: The team has one last shot to take out the unmasked Captain Krakoa. Written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Javier Garron. ($3.99) Check out a preview.

Tony’s pick: Superman #9: Superman’s battle with the Chained has left him wounded in unexpected ways. To save Metropolis, Superman has no choice but to put on a special armor built by Lex Luthor. Written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Bruno Redondo. ($4.99)

Anna’s pick: Wolverine #40: Logan’s journey across the globe brings him to New York City and a reunion with Spider-Man. But will the ol’ Parker luck help Wolverine against the wrath of the Stark Sentinels or put the fall in Fall of X? Written by Benjamin Percy and drawn by Ibrahim Moustafa. ($4.99) Previously, in X-Chat …
