So, funny story. We were at New York Comic Con on Friday with the intention of attending the X-Men panel, but the line to get in was so long that we were boxed out. Y’all hungry for that X-Men tea, apparently.
But enough bitterness. After taking a look at Marvel’s “Shadows of Tomorrow” announcements, here they are ranked in terms of hype.
- Cyclops: Alex Paknadel’s Sentinels was one of the best of the From the Ashes batch, so reading his take on the X-Men’s leader is a no-brainer.
- X-Men: I remain as ever the MacKay X-Men apologist, and look forward to seeing how his story continues in a post-Age of Doug world. Also, Tony Daniel art!
- Uncanny X-Men: David Marquez is back on art as he and Gail Simone return to their Mutina plot.
- Wade Wilson: Deadpool: While it is true that Deadpool is not a mutant and not an X-man, Ben Percy has proven repeatedly he knows how to write Wade with equal parts amped-up action and sad-clown antics. This will be an enjoyable book.
- Inglorious X-Force: This one has an interesting team lineup. The people love Boom-Boom, and it’s good that Hellverine is being brought back into the fold. The real question is, can Archangel still turn into a buzzsaw?
- Magik & Colossus: Ashley Allen and German Peralta’s Magik series was pretty popular, so we’re glad it’s getting the Scarlet Witch treatment and relaunching with a new #1 that gives her double-billing with her brother, who stayed largely hidden during From the Ashes, even if that is because he disguised himself as Forge’s robot in X-Force. Maybe he’ll lighten up for the first time in 33 years!
- Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant: If you liked Murewa Ayodele’s take on Storm as a proxy in a battle of cosmic forces influenced heavily by Dragonball and Ayodele’s own Akogun: Brutalizer of Gods, here’s more of that. If you’re hoping we can move on from Ororo’s OP era and bring her back down to Earth … well, fingers crossed.
- Rogue: If this is a follow-up to Declan Shalvey’s Mystique series, great. If it’s a nostalgia-lite series trading heavily on Rogue’s early days as a member of Raven’s Brotherhood … eh.
- Wolverine: Look, I haven’t read Wolverine since the first issue (barring that Daniel Warren Johnson backup in issue #400); that isn’t going to change now. Though I wonder if anyone will bring up Silver Sable’s brief dalliance with Nightcrawler at the tail end of the Krakoa era.
- Generation X-23: MORE new X-kids? We’re still developing the ones we just got! Clever naming, but it’s gonna have a bunch of fans wondering where Husk and Skin are.
Fans of Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men may have to wait a little bit before we catch up with Kitty, Emma and the kids, but given Ewing was on the panel, it’s clear they’re not going anywhere. Whatever she does will be worth the wait.
But these announcements do beg the question: Where’s Jean?
