Redesigning Marvel Girl

We’ve done a lot of these X-Men Redesigns now, covering a wide array of well known and beloved or infamous characters from X-Men history. But with spring in the air, we felt it was time for reinvention, for rebirth. With that in mind we plumbed the depths of X-Men lore to find an underdog, someone nearly forgotten by the masses and creative teams alike.

Jean Grey is a character introduced in 1963 with the original five X-Men who had the power of telekinesis and later on telepathy. Jean accompanied her friends on many early missions to places like the Savage Land and space all while experiencing the ups and downs of a will-they-won’t-they with her teammate Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, and boyfriend of another relatively unknown character, Wolverine. During an emergency mission in space, the spacecraft they were traveling on was damaged and Jean Grey sacrificed herself to save her friends. She was never seen again.

But Krakoa is a new era where anything is possible. We have hope that this forgotten gem of X history will be brought back and given a place of some prominence. Our artists pushed their imaginations to the brink referencing runway fashion, iconic superhero design, and art history to bring something so new and fresh to the table.

John Caden

“I thought long and hard and couldn’t come up with a better design than the iconic green dress.”

Karen Charm

“You really can’t beat this mask design – instantly recognizable, instantly iconic. I wanted to incorporate it into a timeless look for one of my favorite characters :>”

Bradley Clayton

“talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.”

Calvin Lin

“I just thought Jean would look nice in a green dress”

Josh Cornillon

“Jean Grey is my favorite C-Lister, so I’m incredibly excited to be able to introduce her to a new generation of X-Readers. I found inspiration in Miu Miu’s recent collections, and her mask is a reference to one of my favorite mutants, Firestar!”

Jarrod Chilton

“For this design, I wanted to go practical. Pragmatic even. A green mini dress with a sensible chunky heel to fight for a world that hates and fears you. And to also sit in. A LOT.  Don’t even think about bending over to pick up that thing you dropped. Use that TK or it’s lost to you forever.”

Kenneth Laster

“Green dress, some boots, and a mask–what more can you ask? It get’s better everytime ya draw it”

Alex Buckland

“SLAYYYYYYY!”

Christian Tomas

“When it comes to Jean Grey, or any superhero outfit honestly, there is nothing more iconic than the green mini with the gold boots and gloves. Why fix something that’s not broken?”

Adam Reck

Joe Bortner

“I’ve drawn Jean a lot (and in a lot of different outfits) but after months of consideration, I decided that there’s essentially nothing you can improve about the classic green dress. It’s an omega-level costume.”

Léa Dupic

“I tried to come up with something new for my darling Jean, but why mess with perfection? So I decided to draw an hommage to her classic look, with plunging v neck, x-belt and green mini-dress.”

Valentine Smith

“As you can see, I’ve come at this redesign with what I consider a completely new approach. It’s innovative, it’s original, it’s something completely unseen. This isn’t your 70’s Jean Grey, it’s the Jean Grey of the future and beyond!”

Stephen Reinfurt

Joshua Bruckner

“After much thought and consideration I kept coming back to the classic Marvel Girl look. It’s so simple and iconic, and why mess with perfection? There’s a reason she went back to it on Krakoa, and it made her stand out among the new X-Men with their updated costumes! And green is my favorite color so this was perfect.”

Dillon Snook

“As Jean’s number one fan, I wanted to make something that I knew (as Jean’s number one fan) was a unified direction for the character.”

Josh Cornillon
