Wonder Woman #789 Is An All Action Epic

Wonder Woman #789 Banner

Villainy Inc. is badder and bigger than ever as the Wonder friends come to a head with Cizcoā€™s scheme. Wonder Woman #789 is written by Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan, penciled by Emanuela Lupacchino and Eduardo Ponsico, inked by Wade Von Grawbadger and Julio Ferreiro, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettered by Pat Brosseau.Ā

Wonder Woman Vs. Cizco

Diana Vs Cizco and Dolos

Just like that weā€™re in the thick of it just like a giant Dr Cizco in the park. But heā€™s an illusion projected by the Duke of Deception, Dolos. I love when folks utilize the lasso of truth, and I adore the way the art team depicts how Diana sees through the lasso with the tinted blue with stars. With Cizco and Dolos together, theyā€™ve got the men under a spell. Theyā€™re riled up against her while she fights Dolos, whoā€™s no match for her.

Siggy does crowd control

Siggy and Steve vs Dr. Poison

The boys are on the way to do some crowd control, but have crashed due to the red-hats. Steveā€™s pretty out of it, but Siegfried leaps into action. He sadly doesnā€™t get to use his blade and before he gets to put up too much of a fight, Dr. Poison blasts both the boys with her specialty.Ā

Etta and Calculus

Etta Vs Prof. Calculus

Meanwhile, surprising no one, Etta has found something nefarious in the milk all the non-soy boys have been consuming. Sheā€™s set up a meeting with Dr. Calculus, her old prof from back in her college days. She already suspects something is up, but to no avail. He takes her out with a taser.

Sweetheartā€™s having second thoughts about being part of the villains group. She drops the magic glass, amplifying Cizcoā€™s power, and itā€™s hard to tell if itā€™s truly from the heat or because she just doesnā€™t have the heart to keep up her villainous acts. Turns out sheā€™s not the only one having second thoughts about Cizcoā€™s plans.

But the Prof has Etta and the Doctor has the boys. Things arenā€™t looking good for Diana as she heads into the next part of the final showdown that Cizco has arranged. Try as I might, thereā€™s not a whole lot to break down in this issue. The Duke of Deception and Professor Calculus are some fun golden age enemies to bring back along with Doctor Poison and Dr. Psycho.

Iā€™ve enjoyed C&Cā€™s take on these villains so far and have been intrigued by the golden age references that echo current events in their tale, so Iā€™m curious to see where #790 takes us!

Wonderful Whims

  • Really appreciate the use of ā€œMilk-drinkersā€ both as a literal descriptor and for what HAS to be a Skyrim reference.
  • ā€œLetā€™s dance, Dukeā€ is such a great, classic sounding comic phrase!
