You think Gotham City’s bad, check out the Gotham Below in this week’s Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays, everything else Wednesdays.

Matt’s pick: Batman: City of Madness #1: Buried deep beneath Gotham City there exists another Gotham, a living nightmare, populated by twisted mirrors of our Gotham’s denizens, fueled by the fear and hatred flowing down from above. For decades, the doorway between the cities has been sealed and heavily guarded by the Court of Owls. But now the door swings wide, and the twisted version of the Dark Knight has escaped … to trap and train a Robin of his own. By Christian Ward for DC Black Label. ($6.99) Listen to Ward talk about the book on WMQ&A: The ComicsXF Interview Podcast.

Anna’s pick: CapWolf and the Howling Commandos #1: When Captain America is transformed into a werewolf on the front lines of World War II, he’ll need the help of the Howling Commandos to take down a band of Nazi cultists who intend to use supernatural forces to turn the tide of battle. But can Cap control the skeptical, jaded Commandos when he can barely control himself? Written by Stephanie Phillips and drawn by Carlos Magno. ($4.99)

Mark’s pick: Space Usagi: Yokai Hunter #1: It’s Usagi Yojimbo. In space. It probably rules. By Stan Sakai for Dark Horse. ($4.99)

Tony’s pick: Sonic the Hedgehog Halloween Special: It’s “A Very Chaotix Halloween” as Vector and Espio take their little buddy out in search of sweet rewards. Little do they know, there’s a monster stealing candy from all the kids. Fortunately, there’s no mystery the Chaotix Detective Agency can’t solve, especially when they’ve got a little help from Sonic and Tails. Written by Mark Bouchard and drawn by Jack Lawrence for IDW. ($4.99) Our Sonic coverage is … weird.

Adam’s pick: X-Men Red #16: The Four Horsemen ride across the land. Daemon armies sweep through the skies. The Spire Vile is open. As Genesis launches her endgame, Storm and the Brotherhood fight for their lives across the Red Planet … and somewhere, the last Okkara Seed blooms. The Revelation is here. Written by Al Ewing and drawn by Yildiray Cinar. ($4.99) Previously, in X-Men Red …

Rasmus’ pick: Venom #26: Black Widow’s a Venom now. Deal with it. Written by Torunn Grønbekk and drawn by Julius Ohta. ($3.99) Listen to Grønbekk talk about Venom and more on WMQ&A.

Dan’s pick: Giant Kokju TP: A giant monster rises from the Pacific Ocean to literally f*&% the city of San Francisco in this Image miniseries by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Scott Koblish. ($14.99) Behold the two Gerry Duggans.

Austin’s pick: Marvel Age Omnibus: Long before the internet, True Believers of the 1980s got the inside scoop on Marvel’s upcoming projects in the pages of Marvel Age. Think of it like Nintendo Power but for Mar-Vell instead of Mario. Now, the first three years’ worth of this fan-favorite promotional magazine are reprinted in full — a veritable treasure trove of interviews, previews of the major titles of 1982-85, behind-the-scenes features, house ads, covers and the cartoons of Fred Hembeck. Collecting Marvel Age #1-34 and Annual #1.
