Fall of the House of X kicks off the new year and our Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays, everything else Wednesdays.

Rasmus’ pick: Fall of the House of X #1: Mutantkind has never had a greater fall. Outlawed, hunted, killed, most of their kind missing or dead, and now, one of their greatest leaders, Cyclops, is on trial facing the death penalty. Ready or not, the time has come for the X-Men to make their final stand against the forces that have struck them low. The tale of the house Xavier built will long be told, and few will forget this darkest chapter. Written by Gerry Duggan (X-Men) and drawn by Lucas Werneck (Immortal X-Men). Adam’s pick: Marvel Meow #1: Marvel’s most fearsome — and furriest — heroes are here to save the day and beg for treats. Follow Chewie, Liho, Alpine and the rest of the Avengers’ feline friends as they cause a few cat-tastrophes, and maybe vanquish some villains in the process. Collecting the Infinity Comic series from Marvel Unlimited and featuring a new cover and new story. By Nao Fuji. ($5.99) Buy it here.

Bonus pick: Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1: Clad in the black of mourning, the Midnight Mission remains. But who is left to keep the faith? And how have they been changed by the Black Spectre’s master stroke? The next chapter of Moon Knight starts here as the congregants of the Midnight Mission pick up the pieces and carry on the mission, and find themselves faced with a mysterious new enemy in eerily familiar vestments. Written by Jed MacKay and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio. ($5.99) Buy it here.

Tony’s pick: The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries Vol. 3 #1: The big top’s the place for thrills and chills — even more so when a traveling circus is haunted. But even Scooby and the gang don’t realize just how chilling it is for Nightwing, because this is Haly’s Circus, Dick Grayson’s childhood home. Written by Sholly Fisch and drawn by Dario Brizuela. ($2.99) Listen to Fisch talk about the latest volume of BatScoob on WMQ&A: The ComicsXF Interview Podcast. Buy it here.

Dan’s pick: Pine and Merrimac #1: After a lifetime of witnessing the worst humanity has to offer, former homicide detective Linnea Kent has decided to put all of that behind her. Alongside her husband, a former professional MMA fighter, she’s moved far from the busy city to open up a quiet little detective agency. At first, the simple cases were exactly what she was looking for, but there’s more to the quaint hamlet than Linnea could have possibly imagined. Written by Kyle Starks (Peacemaker Tries Hard) and drawn by Fran Galan for BOOM Studios. ($4.99) Starks wrote one of our favorite comics of 2023. Buy it here.

Mark’s pick: Fantastic Four #15: It was created by mistake: a mind of minds, spread out across the vast swath of humanity, unseen but strong, stronger still every day. The world was confusing, but it learned. It grew. And then the Fantastic Four tried to kill it. They failed. But they showed it they were a threat. They showed it that it needed to defend itself. They showed it that the FF needed to die. Written by Ryan North and drawn by Ivan Fiorelli. ($3.99) Check out a preview. Buy it here.

Austin’s pick: Darth Vader #42: In the wake of Dark Droids, Darth Vader explores his powers and takes on the most dangerous team of rebel heroes he’s ever faced. Meanwhile, the greatest threat to the Emperor’s rule is rising from within the Empire itself. Featuring the comic-book debut of Enric Pryde from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Written by Greg Pak and drawn by Adam Gorham. ($4.99) Buy it here.

Matt’s pick: Valiant Classics: Archer & Armstrong Revival TP: Archer is the world’s greatest hand-to-hand fighter, an expert marksman, and a seeker of truth and righteousness. Armstrong is an immortal warrior who has reluctantly brawled his way from prehistory to modern times only to realize the best way to face life’s many challenges is to grab a drink. But Armstrong counts as his worst day when Archer turned up and decided they were partners — a team chosen by fate to save the world. Collecting issues #0 to #12 of the original 1992 Archer & Armstrong series by Barry Windsor-Smith, Jim Shooter and Bob Layton as Alien Books begins taking advantage of its Valiant Comics license. ($39.99) Buy it here.
