In this seven-page preview of Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant #1, Ororo Munroe journeys to Rage, the Rogue Planet, heretofore unseen cousin of Ego, the Living Planet (sentient planets, so hot right now), to have tea with Susanoo, Shinto god of storms, who summoned Storm to help him commit seppuku.
First, though, we get a quick recap of all the stuff Storm got up to in the previous volume of her solo series, much of which involved her fighting other gods and being a pawn in games of cosmic forces.
But amid even all that, we are shown the moment from Storm (2024) #1 where she saves a man in an Orchis T-shirt from a nuclear meltdown in Oklahoma.
Y’all remember Orchis, right? The anti-mutant hate group made up of scientists and soldiers from various Marvel paramilitary organizations (AIM, SHIELD, Hydra, etc.) that aligned themselves with the machines (Nimrod, Omega Sentinel) against Krakoa? In case you forgot, a small explainer caption reminds you in this recap.
The caption sticks out, almost as if added as an afterthought. It’s round with a tail, like a word balloon, instead of rectangular like the captions around it. It’s also translucent, with mixed-case lettering and a different font.
Regardless of all that, given current events, it’s probably a good time to remind readers of Orchis, because while they haven’t been relevant to the X-Men books in a year and a half, their real-world analog is operating in our cities right now.
