In this week’s Sentinels #3 by Alex Paknadel and Justin Mason (which we previewed last week), the team goes to Madripoor on a mission to apprehend Fabian Cortez, who – SPOILERS – is actually using his powers to heal the people of Lowtown, because apparently some people did learn lessons from their time on Krakoa.
That mission was interrupted by Magneto, but even after reading the issue, we weren’t entirely convinced it was Magneto, given his current weakened condition in Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s X-Men.
Why are we talking about Sentinels in this preview of Declan Shalvey’s Mystique, you may ask if you haven’t scrolled down yet? Because, apparently, Mystique is also in Lowtown, also has eyes on Cortez and also is about to run into Larry Trask’s team of human-Sentinel hybrids, which lends credence to our theory from last week that the Magneto we saw in Sentinels #3 may not have been Magneto after all, but Mystique.
(Although we also thought it may have been Joseph, so I don’t protest that it was an airtight theory.)
The big question of course is, why? And the answer may lie in a Bluesky post Wednesday from Paknadel, who posted a page from a recent issue of X-Men:

Might Raven be running a mission for Cyclops, fetching a redemption-seeking Cortez to heal an ailing Magneto? And might that mission have led her to run afoul of the Sentinels, leading her to fight them off by posing as the Master of Magnetism?
Guess we’ll have to read the whole dang thing to find out.
Check out our exclusive preview of Mystique #3, out next week, and keep scrolling for the basic deets.
