This Dike Ruan variant cover to February’s Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant #1 reminds us of a wonderful essay Jude Jones wrote last year about the importance of Ororo’s natural hair texture.
“Storm may not be a queen anymore, but she still wears a crown upon her head,” Jude wrote at the time in response to a comment made by then-incoming X-Men editor Tom Brevoort. “How much better the world would be if her crown matched the crown naturally laid on that of her fans.”
One of the best parts of Russell Dauterman’s Krakoa-era redesign of Storm is giving her hair that both looks naturally textured and resembles the flowing nature of a cloud. It is at once the perfect encapsulation of her identity as a Black woman and as an omega-level mutant.
Ruan’s variant cover goes one step further to play with her hair as negative space upon which to lay the trade dress.
