Wonder Woman #793 is a Trinity Reunion

Wonder Woman #793 Banner

The DC Trinity united as the Justice Leagueā€™s abandoned Watchtower has sent out a distress signal. This leads our trio on a mystery in space to find out who could have possibly activated it! Wonder Woman #793 written by Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan, penciled by Emanuela Lupacchino, inked by Wade Von Grawbadger, colored by Jordie Bellaire, and lettered by Pat Brosseau.

A View of Earth

What a View

Wonder Woman and Superman wax poetic about what the view of our world means to them. To Diana, itā€™s the cycle of things, everything contained, itā€™s GAIA. To Clark, itā€™s just a simple Haiku about home. I think that sums up how each of these characters would see their home planet well, actually. Diana strives to see connections and make connections. She is always ready to meet the community as a whole or for all mankind. Clarkā€™s a hometown boy, of course, and always has a nice, straightforward view of things. The comforting conversation about what planet Earth means to them is shaken by the disturbing reason they are at the Watchtower, though, and the creepy vibes that it gives off as Batman surprises them by strolling through the airlock.Ā

This sequence sent chills down my spine with the moody tones Bellaire used and the unknown nature of what could be in the Watchtower. It reminded me of the same eerie space horror that chilled me from watching Prometheus or Alien for the first time and I am here for it! The Trinity works best when they have a mystery to solve and this issue delivered on those fronts.

Something in the Vents

A Sound to Investigate

Once Bruce is there, itā€™s straight to the point and Clark hears a disturbance. Itā€™s off with the grate and through the ductwork they go. And who should they meet through the other end butā€¦ Martian Manhunter? And Aquaman? And Green Lantern? Wait, something’s not adding up right! With quick use of her Lasso, the truth reveals that the Imperium is aboard the Watchtower. If you arenā€™t familiar with them, The Imperium is kind of like if the Borg met the Founders from Star Trek (and if you arenā€™t familiar with Star Trek, what are you doing? Get on it!) Thankfully, the entire Imperium isnā€™t here to take over Earth. This is a group that got left behind, but they arenā€™t leaving again without a fight. The Trinity make quick work of them and round them up before settling down for a cup of coffee.

Coffee Talk

An Acquired Taste

Bruce would be the one to bring instant coffee along as the Trinity catches up and decides what comes next now that this creepy space mystery is solved. As Iā€™ve mentioned before, Iā€™m a big fan of superheroes getting down time. I myself am prone to overwork, as Iā€™m at a loss for what to do when I have downtime and I donā€™t even have to save the world, just my hectic work schedule, running, two kiddos and my dog! For me, letting heroes have a bit of downtime not only gives some nice breathing room in a story, but also can help show more intimate details about who a character is more than constant fighting ever can. I loved this little coffee talk scene, even if the coffee was awful.

The Trinity gives the Imperium faction a chance to decide whatā€™s next for them over a couple of oreos and we get to end on a note of hope. Iā€™m not the best at keeping up with whatā€™s going on in Superman or Batmanā€™s side of issues, but this single shot in Wonder Woman #793 is a great chance to catch our own quiet moment in a string of intense arcs!

Wonderful Whims

  • Personally, Iā€™d rather suffer a caffeine headache than sip instant coffee!
  • Editor Mattā€™s note: Bruce brings instant? A sure sign Alfred is still sadly deceased
  • The shot of the Trinity with ā€œThis is where I belongā€ was too much! šŸ˜
