Tom King does Wonder Woman, Nightcrawler does Spider-Man and more Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays, everything else Wednesdays.

Sean’s pick: Wonder Woman #1: After a mysterious Amazonian is accused of mass murder, Congress passes the Amazon Safety Act, barring all Amazons from U.S. soil. To carry out their plans, the government starts a task force, the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.), to remove those who don’t comply, by any means necessary. Now, Wonder Woman finds herself an outlaw in the world she once swore to protect. Written by Tom King (Human Target) and drawn by Daniel Sampere (Dark Crisis). ($4.99) Check out our previous Wonder Woman coverage.

Adam’s pick: Uncanny Spider-Man #1: On the run from Orchis, Kurt Wagner is hiding out in NYC as a Spider-Man. But he can’t ignore the mutant plight forever. Written by Si Spurrier (Way of X/Legion of X) and drawn by Lee Garbett (Death of Doctor Strange). ($4.99) Listen to this Nightcrawler-centric episode of Battle of the Atom.

Tony’s pick: Captain America #1: Decades ago, Steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now, powerful and insidious forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present and future collide as the man out of time reckons with an existential threat determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost. Written by J. Michael Straczynski (That time Mephisto broke up Spider-Man’s marriage) and drawn by Jesus Saiz (Punisher). ($5.99) Check out our previous Cap coverage.

Matt’s pick: Rare Flavours #1: To achieve his vision of becoming the next Anthony Bourdain, Rubin enlists Mo, a filmmaker who has seen better days, to document the world-renowned cuisine of India and the people behind such glorious food. But little does Mo know that there’s more to Rubin than meets the eye, and the mortals play a darker role in the show than they were prepared for. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr team of Ram V and Filipe Andrade team up for another banger at BOOM Studios. ($4.99) Check out our coverage of Laila Starr.

Dan’s pick: Jack Kirby’s Starr Warriors Starring Adam Starr and the Solar Legion: Cartoonist Tom Scioli takes one of Jack Kirby’s earliest creations, a sci-fi space pirate/plane warfare story, and “remixes” it for Image Comics. ($9.99)

Austin’s pick: Dark X-Men #2: The Dark X-Men’s first “rescue mission” ended in blood and flame, the team is already at each other’s throats and the fallen now rise against them. Plus, Madelyne Pryor makes the worst mistake possible in a horror story: Never. Ever. Split up. Written by Steve Foxe and drawn by Jonas Scharf. ($3.99) Check out a preview, and our coverage of issue #1.

Chris’ pick: X-Men Annual #1: Drawn to the Alaskan wilderness by magics neither of them understand, Captain Marvel and Cyclops duke it out. De-aged, TV-ified Agatha Harkness’ plan for the Darkhold is slowly taking shape, but will it come at the expense of two of the world’s greatest heroes? (No.) And what can an energy-blasting mutant do against a woman who can absorb the energy of the sun? Fight to a draw and then team up against the real threat, probably. Written by Paul Allor and Stephanie Phillips and drawn by Alessandro Miracolo and Stefano Landini. ($4.99) Previously, in X-Chat …

Anna’s pick: Guardians of the Galaxy Epic Collection: Somebody’s Got to Do It: As the Marvel Universe is rocked by another Annihilation event, Peter Quill suits up as Star-Lord and joins the fight alongside a motley crew including Mantis, Groot and Rocket Raccoon, and later Gamora, Drax and Adam Warlock. Read the stories that led someone to say, “Hey, they should make a movie out of these guys.” Collects Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord #1-4 and Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) #1-12. ($44.99) Check out our previous Guardians coverage.

Rasmus’ pick: Ice Cream Man Vol. 9: Heavy Narration: Four more chilling chapters that chafe and chew at the human mind: a bifurcated tale of woe/whimsy; a small story about two unlucky tramps; a bestiary of some very necessary monsters; and a look into the big ol’ belly of a whale. Written by W. Maxwell Prince and drawn by Martin Morazzo for Image Comics. ($16.99) Check out our previous Ice Cream Man coverage.
