Usagi Yojimbo DOES NOT cross over with The Crow in this week’s Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays (for now), everything else Wednesdays.

Mark’s pick: Usagi Yojimbo: The Crow #1: Finally making it out of the frozen mountains, Usagi and Yukichi come across a merchant being attacked by four brigands. They rescue the supposed merchant only to discover much later that he is really a criminal with a huge bounty on his head. Of course, wherever there is a huge reward you will find bounty hunters Gen and Stray Dog, and other unscrupulous trackers. So wait, this isn’t a crossover between Usagi Yojimbo and James O. Barr’s The Crow? I’m so confused. By Stan Sakai for Dark Horse. ($4.99) Buy it here.

Bonus pick: Principles of Necromancy #1: A new publisher appeareth! While brave knights and dangerous monsters wage endless war, business is booming for Dr. Jakob Eyes, a traveling physician whose arcane remedies are the closest thing to magic the world knows. These gruesome miracles are only stepping stones for Dr. Eyes’ ultimate goal: to overcome death itself. The launch title for Magma Comix is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Guardians of the Galaxy) and drawn by Eamon Winkle. ($3.99) Listen to the Magma Comix founders on WMQ&A, and Lanzing and Kelly.

Dan’s pick: The One Hand #3: As the mysteries of the new One Hand Killer deepen, Detective Ari Nassar is starting to see connections everywhere. The walls are closing in as his prior arrests are questioned, and yet, why does he think the only person who can help is Odell Watts, the man Ari put away years ago for the very same crimes? Written by Ram V and drawn by Laurence Campbell for Image. ($3.99) Listen to Ram V on WMQ&A. | Buy it here.

Jake’s pick: Birds of Prey #8: Mari McCabe, aka Vixen, has joined the Birds to help them get to the bottom of the mysterious villain hunting them through time. But first, Mari has a fashionably dangerous problem of her own that needs solving. Written by Kelly Thompson and drawn by Javier Pina. ($3.99) Buy it here.

Tony’s pick: Immortal Thor #9: The Son of Odin came to the citadel of Roxxon to make war for the sake of the Earth herself. But his enemies were waiting to steal from him the one thing that was Thor’s alone, and they had crafted the foulest of weapons to do it. This is the story of the Immortal Thor, and of the trap he could not escape. Written by Al Ewing and drawn by Ibraim Roberson. ($4.99) Check out a preview. | Buy it here.

Rasmus’ pick: Love Everlasting #14: The Cowboy continues to serve the system and deliver death, but every time he encounters Joan, his soul rips apart. How long can he go on without destroying everything he loves, including Joan Peterson? By Tom King and Elsa Charretier and published by Image. ($3.99) Buy it here.

Scott’s pick: Poison Ivy #21: Who’s black, gray and green all over? Batman. Uncover how Poison Ivy and the Dark Knight first came to blows in a story written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn by Marcio Takara. ($3.99) Buy it here.

Austin’s pick: Star Wars #45: Lando Calrissian is on trial for crimes against the Alliance. The evidence is clear, and his friends have turned against him, from Luke Skywalker to Leia Organa. Matt’s pick: Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story OGN: Nia Nal’s spent her whole life taking a back seat to her older sister, Maeve, who’s expected to inherit their mother’s Naltorian powers — the ability to see the future through dreams. But when Nia starts having visions of the future, she must suppress her powers to protect her relationship with her sister. There’s only one problem: Nia can’t stay awake forever.
