With her new solo series debuting next week, our group finally got to Wolverine! No, not that one, the other one. The one the Krakoa era firmly established as a Wolverine in her own right. The one who’s more popular with certain circles of the internet.
Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, aka X-23, aka Talon, aka Scratch (See NYX) has gone through a few looks since her introduction into the X-Men world. Many of them are either very simple, or inspired by her alternate and goth street clothes, or make explicit reference to her clone-dad, Logan. She has personality and spunk to boot, so this made her a perfect redesign candidate.
Our team went in a few different directions, pulling from different parts of Laura’s history and personality to give her an all-new, all-different look. See what everyone came up with, and give the artists a follow on social media!

For this round, I wanted to approach Laura as if I was going to be designing her to have her own animated show loosely inspired by the All-New Wolverine series. I wanted to take the iconic yellow-and-black Wolverine suit and adjust it to be something that was her own, so I took inspiration from the other styles of outfits she’s worn in the past. I knew that I wanted to have some sort of reference to her sister Gabby, which is where the pink hair clip comes into play. All in all, it was kind of a fun full-circle moment since she got her start as an animated character.

I was inspired by Alex Ross’ design for Logan but wanted to put a punk twist on it to tie back to Laura’s alt style.

For redesigning Laura Kinney, I went back to the (gene) pool of Logan. I made Laura look short, stocky and muscle-y, like her clone-dad, and then borrowed the brown-and-yellow colors from Logan’s old John Byrne costume. The fur details make her look more like a real wolverine, and the trendy leather jacket adds a modern touch to a fairly retro look.

I wanted a completely different color scheme from Laura’s past looks, so I came up with the idea of making her a member of the Canadian superteam Alpha Flight. She’s the result of a Weapon X experiment combining the genetic material of Logan and Silver Fox. The look is simple, sleek and sporty.

In a post-Krakoan diaspora, Laura helps individual mutants at a street level, so I imagined her as a rebel organizer, tapping into the countercultural aesthetic the character’s design has often flirted with. One part Vivienne Westwood to two parts Lisbeth Salander.

I just really let the butch lover in me speak for this one!
