Marvel’s Blood Hunt wasn’t always called that.
The summer crossover event, which pits the heroes of the Marvel Universe against many, many vampires across many, many titles, started out being referred to by Marvel editorial and creatives as “UVE,” or “Untitled Vampire Event,” according to writer Jed MacKay, speaking during his appearance on the upcoming 300th episode of The ComicsXF Interview Podcast (formerly WMQ&A).
As he tells it, the final naming was revealed when MacKay went to pitch some bloodsucking bad guys for the event, which includes a main Blood Hunt series as well as tie-ins across MacKay’s other books (Avengers, Doctor Strange, Vengeance of the Moon Knight) and elsewhere.
“We went back and forth on a lot of titles for the series, and then at one point, I was like, ‘Well, I’ve got these bad guys, I’m gonna call them the Blood Hunt,'” MacKay says, “and Tom (Marvel Executive Editor and Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort) was like, ‘Yeah, marketing took that name, so you’re gonna have to think of a new name for your bad guys.’
“Well, at least the event has a name now.”
MacKay has plenty more to say about Blood Hunt, his upcoming stint on X-Men (including who else is in the book and how many more titles there may be) and his other comics work, but you’re gonna have to wait till Tuesday to hear the rest of it (unless you back the ComicsXF Patreon, then you can hear it Sunday).
In the meantime, we’ve got an exclusive cover reveal for Avengers #16, a Blood Hunt tie-in. Check out Joshua Cassara’s cover, and keep scrolling for the basic deets.
