Roxxon gets its own Thor, Rear Window in the Arctic and more of this week’s Staff Picks

Each week, ComicsXF staff offer their recommendations for what to read. New DC books come out Tuesdays (for now), everything else Wednesdays.

Mark’s pick: Roxxon Presents Thor #1: In his secret identity as A.I. spokesguru Chad Hammer, the son of Odin knows Mama Gaea is a top priority for heroes and for business. But when a group of insane environmental activists take “saving the Earth” too far, it’s time to show them the wisdom on both sides — as Thor. But which god of evil is prompting the kids to rebel? Could it be Loki, god of evil? Featuring an all-star cast of heroes: Minotaur, Executioner, Enchantress and the Thor-Truck. This is the story of the Roxxin’ Thor. Written by Al Ewing and drawn by Greg Land. ($3.99) Previously, in Thor stuff … | Buy it here.

Dan’s pick: Blow Away #1: Wildlife photographer Brynne Brautigan, isolated in the remote cold of Baffin Island, sees something she can’t unsee. An argument, followed by an outburst of intense violence between two nearby climbers. Did she just witness a murder? In a frantic search for the truth, Brynne discovers just what she’s looking for, but little does she know that more than the silent white of winter is keeping her company. Written by Zac Thompson and drawn by Nicola Izzo for BOOM Studios. ($4.99) Listen to Thompson’s most recent appearance on WMQ&A: The ComicsXF Interview Podcast. | Buy it here.

Tony’s pick: Spectacular Spider-Men #2: Surprising anyone who knows Peter Parker (but probably not those who know Miles Morales), the Spider-Men have been keeping up their weekly meetup at the Coffee Bean. Sadly, that hasn’t given them any insight into the machinations of the Jackal. And what do all these mysterious interludes add up to? Written by Greg Weisman and drawn by Humberto Ramos. ($3.99) Previously, in Spider-stuff … | Buy it here.

Rasmus’ pick: Helen of Wyndhorn #2: As the secret history of her family begins to unravel, Helen explores the grounds of Wyndhorn House and its many inhabitants both real and fantastical, on a quest to understand her true family heritage and what role she plays. Written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely for Dark Horse Comics. ($4.99) | Buy it here.

Anna’s pick: Penthouse Comics #2: “Gun Crazy” continues with the wild ride of Dolly Sanchez and Lanoya O’Brien, two girls fighting for survival in this violent story in the crossroads of Tarantino, VHS stuff and the ’80s. Guillem March continues “The Dream,” a tale about Megan, a Hollywood casting director who attempts to bring out the potential actor hidden deep inside a stripper in the San Francisco suburbs. “I Spit on Your Grave” is an adaptation of Vernon Sullivan’s novel about Lee Anderson, whose only goal is to avenge the death of his brother. “Miss October” continues following a young and high-flying female who desperately must find the killer who’s murdering women one by one and dubbing them by each month of the year, before she’s next. ($9.99)

Adam’s pick: Fall of the House of X #4: They say a wounded animal can be the most dangerous kind of animal to face. As the fight between the mutants and Orchis reaches a deadly pitch, a startling revelation rocks the X-Men to their core. The two series that are one come together in one horrible betrayal as the Krakoan Age nears its conclusion. Written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Lucas Werneck and Jethro Morales. ($4.99) Previously, in Fall of the House of X … | Buy it here.

Austin’s pick: Cobra Commander #4: Cobra Commander has found a new ally — willing or not — that may just make him unstoppable. Unless, of course, someone is one step ahead of him. Written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Andrea Milana. ($3.99) Previously, in the Energon Universe … | Buy it here.

Jake’s pick: Superman #13: Superman and Lobo … team up? Together, the Man of Steel and the Main Man race across the universe on a hunt for the Lobo Army and Brainiac. Can they get along long enough to get to them before Brainiac enacts the next stage of his dangerous plan to create a new House of Brainiac? Written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Rafa Sandoval. ($4.99) Previously, in Superman stuff … | Buy it here.

Scott’s pick: Star Trek #19: Benjamin Sisko has begun imagining an end to his journey and is looking forward to establishing a normal, human life. But unfortunately for Captain Sisko, his next test has been a member of his crew this whole time. Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens for IDW. ($4.99) Previously, in Star Trek stuff … | Buy it here.

Matt’s pick: Nightwing #113/#300: Since the 1940s, you’ve seen him go from acrobat to orphan; from Dick Grayson to Robin; from Robin to Nightwing. You’ve seen him work alongside the universe’s most powerful heroes, against existence’s most sinister villains. You have seen Dick Grayson do so many things, but now, in his 300th issue, you will see him … well, you’ll just have to pick up the issue and find out. (I bet naked. The answer is naked.) Written by Tom Taylor, Marv Wolfman and Michael Conrad and drawn by Daniele di Nicuolo, Bruno Redondo and Howard Porter. ($4.99) Previously, in Nightwing … | Buy it here.
