The Punisher works best when presented as an antihero, standing in opposition to or at loggerheads with a book’s protagonist. In that vein, he is the perfect foil to many of the heroes of Marvel New York.

Black Cat, while similarly antiheroic but nonetheless the protagonist of her own series, uses her sexuality as a weapon. The Punisher uses weapons as his weapons.
