A while ago, I got to chat with Jason Loo, who is writing the X-Vengers series that’s part of this fall’s “Age of Revelation” event. The book sees former New Mutant Dani Moonstar lead a team of mutated Avengers and train them in their new powers as they seek to take down the heir of Apocalypse, Doug Ramsey.
Asked what he liked about Dani, Loo said, “the role that she’s playing in this team, I’m pretty much taking her experience of her being a teacher from the New X-Men and applying that to the Avengers, who got these new powers that have made them either deformed or made them self-doubt their own skills, and Dani is a person that can make them see the best in themselves. And in a way, that’s kinda like what Steve Rogers is to everyone in 616, so she’s given this responsibility after being passed down the mantle from Steve Rogers to do the same thing to these very popular Avengers members, and I feel like she’s got all the expertise to do it. We’ve seen it in all of her series, and this is where she’s gonna really shine as a leader.”
Of all of the original nine New Mutants, Dani is most deserving of a bigger role in the wider Marvel Universe. She co-led her original team alongside Cannonball; she’s been a Valkyrie, so she’s connected to Asgard stuff when it’s plot relevant; she effectively co-headlined the Magik series that just wrapped. Put her in, coach, she’s ready to play!
